Each year on 1 October, the International Day of Older Persons encourages us to reflect on the experiences, contributions and needs of older people in our communities. This year’s theme Building Belonging: Celebrating the Power of our Social Connections is a timely reminder of the important role connection plays in health and wellbeing as we age.
Staying connected remains vital in later life. From a chat with a neighbour to joining a local walking group, social interaction can improve mental wellbeing, reduce loneliness and support physical health. For many older adults the fear of falling or the impact of a previous fall can lead to less activity and greater isolation. This is exactly what we aim to address through Steady On Your Feet.
Falls are not just about balance or strength. They can also affect confidence, reduce independence and limit people’s ability to engage with others. That is why our platform is designed to help older people stay active and feel safer doing everyday things including spending time in their communities.
Whether it is providing a personal action plan, offering advice on strength and balance or signposting local support, Steady On Your Feet gives people the confidence to stay mobile and connected for longer.
This International Day of Older Persons we are proud to support local authorities, NHS organisations and community groups working together to promote healthy ageing and social belonging.
